Ukrainian civil society activists and experts acting in the field of visa liberalization welcome the beginning of Maltese Presidency in the Council of the EU and call upon the Presidency Malta to push forward both adoption of suspension mechanism and immediate start of trilogue on visa liberalization for Ukraine to confirm EU’s credibility and to keep Ukraine on its reforming path.
We publish an official letter addressed to the Government of Malta and Maltese Presidency that was signed by a number of Ukrainian civil society organisations, think tanks and networks.
Letter authors draw the attention of Maltese government to the important role of Ukraine in European security and neighbourhood policy, that were announced among priorities of Maltese presidency, and to the key position of granting visa-free regime in EU-Ukraine relations. They argue that delay in taking the decision on visa waiver for Ukraine may undermine EU’s credibility and lead to political instability on EU’s eastern border. At the same time, they say, “timely decision on visa waiver could become an inspiring achievement for Ukraine and powerful success story for both European neighbourhood policy and Maltese Presidency”.
